FAQ — Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Theravāda Buddhism?

Theravāda (“School of the Elders”) is the oldest surviving Buddhist tradition, preserving the Buddha’s original teachings as recorded in the Pali Canon (Tipiṭaka). Unlike later schools, Theravāda emphasizes:

  • Direct study of the earliest texts
  • Personal practice through meditation (especially vipassanā and samatha)
  • Understanding the Four Noble Truths and Noble Eightfold Path
  • Individual effort toward liberation (arahantship)

It’s practiced primarily in Sri Lanka, Thailand, Myanmar, Laos, and Cambodia.

Do I need to be Buddhist to use GoodwillProject?

Absolutely not. GoodwillProject is open to everyone — whether you’re:

  • Curious about Buddhism
  • Exploring different spiritual paths
  • Already practising meditation
  • Simply seeking clarity and peace of mind

We present the Buddha’s teachings without requiring belief, conversion, or affiliation. The emphasis is on practical understanding and personal verification — “ehi-passiko” (come and see for yourself).

Is meditation necessary for understanding Dhamma?

While intellectual study is valuable, the Buddha emphasized direct experience through practice. The teachings are meant to be verified, not just believed.

Meditation serves two purposes:

  • Samatha (calm): Develops concentration and mental stability
  • Vipassanā (insight): Reveals the true nature of reality (impermanence, suffering, non-self)

However, you can start with study and gradually incorporate practice at your own pace.

What is the Pali Canon?

The Pali Canon (Tipiṭaka — “Three Baskets”) is the most complete and earliest recorded collection of the Buddha’s teachings, preserved in the Pali language. It consists of:

  • Vinaya Piṭaka: Monastic rules and discipline
  • Sutta Piṭaka: Discourses and dialogues of the Buddha
  • Abhidhamma Piṭaka: Philosophical and psychological analysis

GoodwillProject uses translations from the Pali Text Society and Access to Insight — the most authoritative sources.

Is GoodwillProject a religious organization?

No. We are an independent educational initiative focused on sharing authentic Buddhist teachings. We:

  • ❌ Do NOT pursue commercial goals
  • ❌ Do NOT require donations or membership
  • ❌ Do NOT promote dogma or rituals
  • ✅ DO provide free, clear, practical resources
