FIVE POWERS — FOR TEENS & YOUNG ADULTS

Unshakable mental strengths that help you stay calm and clear when life gets overwhelming

Five Powers — unshakable qualities of the mind
These five powers become unshakable through consistent practice, like a mountain in a storm

The Five Powers (Pañca Balāni) are five mental strengths that become unshakable through practice. As the Buddha says in the Saṃyutta Nikāya 48.43: “They are called ‘powers’ because they cannot be shaken by their opposites.”

When qualities like faith or mindfulness mature, they turn into powers. This means your mind stays steady — even when you’re stressed, scared, or distracted. They’re like a mountain in a storm: unmoved.

Power of trust (in your own potential and the path),

Power of energy (to keep going, even when it’s hard),

Power of awareness (staying present, not lost in thoughts),

Power of focus (calm, collected attention),

Power of wisdom (seeing things as they really are).

The Buddha compares these five to a herd of bulls led by a strong bull. Wisdom is the leader — but it can’t arise without trust and effort. All five work together.

Unlike ordinary qualities, these powers don’t fade under pressure. They stay strong — even in difficult moments. That’s why daily practice matters: every time you notice your breath, choose kindness, or pause before reacting, you’re building one of these powers.

Real-Life Example

When your phone buzzes with notifications during homework, it’s easy to get distracted. With the power of awareness, you notice the urge to check your phone without judgment. With the power of energy, you choose to return to your work. This builds mental strength like a muscle.

You don’t need special conditions. Start now — with this breath, this thought, this choice. As these qualities mature through practice, they become unshakable — just like the Five Spiritual Faculties that develop into these powers.

Try This Week

Each day, choose one power to focus on:

  • Monday: Notice when you trust your ability to handle a challenge
  • Tuesday: Find small ways to put in effort (even 2 minutes of focused work)
  • Wednesday: Practice awareness during one routine activity (brushing teeth, eating)
  • Thursday: Set a timer for 3 minutes of undistracted focus on one task
  • Friday: Reflect on one thing you saw clearly this week (something that changes)
