Jāti — Birth

In Pali, jāti** means “birth” — not just being born as a baby, but **the arising of any new state of existence**.

Example:
→ You get angry → you become “the angry person” → that’s a kind of birth.
→ You feel anxious → you identify as “someone with anxiety” → another birth.

Role in dependent origination

Jāti comes right after bhava (becoming):
bhava → jāti → jarāmaraṇa…

Once you’ve formed a new identity (“I am X”), it’s “born” — and with it comes stress, fear, and eventual loss.

“With becoming as condition, birth arises…”
Saṃyutta Nikāya 12.1

Practical meaning

You don’t need to believe in reincarnation. Just notice:
→ Every time you say “I am…”, you give birth to a new self.
→ And every self ages, changes, and dies — causing pain.

The way out?
→ See the label.
→ Don’t cling to it.
→ Stay with experience — not identity.
