Viññāṇa — Consciousness
In Pali, viññāṇa** means “consciousness” — not a soul or permanent self, but the **awareness that arises when three things meet**:
→ a sense organ (eye, ear, mind),
→ an object (colour, sound, thought),
→ attention.
No object? No consciousness.
No organ? No consciousness.
It’s a process — not a thing.
Role in dependent origination
Viññāṇa is the third link:
saṅkhāra → viññāṇa → nāmarūpa…
“With formations as condition, consciousness arises…”
— Saṃyutta Nikāya 12.1
Practical meaning
You don’t need to believe in rebirth. Just notice:
→ When you see a colour, “seeing-consciousness” appears.
→ When you think a thought, “mind-consciousness” appears.
→ It’s gone the next moment.
The mistake? Thinking “I am this awareness.”
The freedom? Seeing it as a flow — not a self.
